Reduce the impact
In this massive property one major concern will be resources. To reduce this impact having a sustainable construct and ideals set in place from day one are key. Firstly this is a garden which means water; water is one of the most precious resources on the planet. Extra focus for sustainable design is critical. I would like to create rain water collection areas around the property, each in conjunction to any roof surface. These can then be sent through a simple purifier and then used in the local garden area. This should help to reduce the impact and draw on the river. Watering will only be done at specific times to minimize the amount of wasted water. Drip irrigation will be utilized whenever possible and paths will have ditches around them so that the run off can be collected. I would also like to look into the ability to use the collection off the roof of the house to be purified and utilized as the main water for the house.
Another resource that will be utilized greatly will be power. With multiple lights throughout the garden and at each of the venues it is critical to be able to reduce power consumption. I would like to do several projects in relation to this. Firstly any hot water that will be used will be from a passive solar heater. These are easy to make and maintain and will be the first big help in reduction. The second will be building all building with excellent insulation and with passive solar designed into each. Lastly I would look for either solar panels or something similar.
If there is a reasonable option to be more sustainable that would be ideal.
